Types of Licenses
PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE
The Private Pilot License is the first step in your aviation career and the foundation of your flight training.
As a Private Pilot you will gain a thorough understanding of the important elements of being a private pilot. Topics include helicopter controls and operations, safety, navigation, systems, weather, principles of flight, flight planning, and aviation regulations.
Regular knoweldge checks will ensure you are retaining the information and prepared to pass your FAA written and flight exams with confidence.
This certification allows you to fly helicopters for personal and recreational use and even take friends and family for a ride. All time gained while earning this license can be applied towards future ratings and is required before pursuing your Commercial Pilot License.
Types of Licenses
COMMERCIAL PILOTS LICENSE
Get paid to fly! This license is required to be able to fly for compensation and/or hire and is the next step in becoming a professional helicopter pilot.
Building on the skills learned during the Private Pilot License phase, the flight training and standard of proficiency required intensifies during your commercial training. You are introduced to more technical maneuvers commonly used in a professional environment.
In addition to the standard commercial techniques such as confined area, off airport and pinnacle landings, training on Maui also provides the unique opportunity to learn to fly in high winds, through valleys, and complete cross country flights over open ocean. It’s truly a diverse place to fly. Flying here provids a fun and challenging experience to further hone your skills as a pilot.
Ground training goes deeper as well. We dive into the FAA regulations, aerodynamics, performance planning, and considerations that apply to a commercial helicopter pilot who is earning a living flying professionally.
While building the hours required for the commercial license, it is common for students to work on their Instrument Rating. Since you are flying the hours anyway… why not earn an additional rating too!
Types of Licenses
INSTRUMENT RATING
This is an add on rating and can be applied to either the Private Pilot Helicopter License or Commercial Helicopter License. It covers the requirements and qualifications a pilot must have in order to fly under IFR or Instrument Flight Rules.
An Instrument Rating is required for flight operations in adverse weather and is often required for commercial pilots flying emergency medical services or for off shore flying operations.
During the instrument rating, you will learn to fly the helicopter by referencing the flight instruments alone with limited visual cues from outside the helicopter. With Maui’s ever changing weather patterns, learning to fly by instrument is a great skill to have.
Types of Licenses
FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR TRAINING
A Flight Instructor Certificate or CFI, is required to be able to teach others how to fly. It’s also a great opportunity to fine tune your own skills as you teach new pilots. Being an instructor is often the first flying job a new commercial pilot will have.
While earning your CFI and CFII ratings you will learn how to instruct new students in all the required areas of aviation and prepare them for a successful flying career. Having your Flight Instructor Certificate will give you that much needed edge when seeking your first job and will help solidify the skills and advanced understanding that you yourself learned during your training as a Private and Commercial Pilot.
